Collington Holiday Festive House

Kelly McMillen and Cody Mayhew of 11306 Longtown Dr (Longtown section) are the Collington Holiday House Festive Award Winners for 2022.  They have lived in Collington for four and a half years and just love Christmas and the holidays.  Once their decorating process begins it takes them about 45 hours to complete, but the job is never really done.  They love to add new things as they find them.

Their house eves are decked out with red and white lights, while strings of white lights cover their roof and surround the windows. They have inflatables of all shapes and sizes including a monsterous Santa Claus, Nutcracker, and Snowman. Lights adorn the perimeter of their yard to help see all of their hard work.

Collington Holiday Classic House

Jon and Beth Frankenfield of 11019 Collington Dr. (Tealby section) are the Collington Holiday House Classic Award Winners for 2022.  They have lived in Collington for 6 years. This year their kids asked for color instead of their typical all white lights and icicles. But they maintained the general aesthetic (simple lines and clean look). They took the time to test all the strands, measure everything, and figure out where each strand should go on the house. Once they had a general plan, they rented a boom lift and started the process of putting up the lights. It took most of the day to get the lights across the peaks and roofline using the lift. Then used a tall ladder for the windows and lights down the verticals. Their porch and mailbox are covered with pre-lit garland that can change color. Many extension cords later (of which figuring out the best way to run them all was one of the biggest hurdles) and the house was done. Overall, it takes several days to get everything up, but it's worth the time in the end to see the house lit up - you can see their house as soon as you turn onto Collington Drive entering Tealby.

All of their house lines including windows are outlined in simple strings of colored lights. The bushes in the front and the sidewalk are adorned with colored lights. This is a great throwback to when string lights were first becoming available to the masses and were available in a variety of colors.

Lawn of the Month - Ty and Mo Reese 100212 Lavenham Turn

What a gorgeous, thick lawn! Ty works hard to achieve such perfection. He keeps the mower deck at 5 inches to keep the lawn healthy—any shorter and the lawn would be prone to disease. He also does not bag his grass clippings, instead mulching them into the lawn when he mows weekly. He also sets his sprinklers to go off before the sun rises, in order to allow the water to sink into the roots. Ty avoids watering during the day to prevent the water droplets from burning the grass. He hires a lawn company to handle the fertilization schedule.

Yard of the Month - Shakil Rehman 14100 Hockliffe Lane

This beautiful landscaping belongs to Shakil Rehman. What a lovely combination of roses, hostas , crape myrtles, a precisely trimmed evergreens. Thank you for keeping Collington looking great, Shakil!

Collington is now awarding both a Yard of the Month AND a Lawn of the Month prize to 2 lucky recipients monthly from May to October. Each recipient will receive a $25 gift card to Lowes, recognition on the Collington HOA fb page, and a sign in their yard for a month proclaiming their winning status.

Yard of the Month=Jerry Whitaker of 9900 Brading Lane.

Jerry had been creating beautiful flowerbeds for 15 years at this location. When he first moved in, he dug up all the clay and replaced it with a garden soil mixture. It has been a love affair with plants ever since! He grows many different varieties of roses, vincas, asiatic lilies, gardenias, dahlias, azaleas, and his personal favorite, white calla lilies. He attributes his success to trial and error, and Miracle Gro, applied anywhere between weekly and monthly, depending on plant needs. He is now sharing his love of plants with his grandchildren, who like to help him in the garden. Thank you, Jerry, for helping to make Collington beautiful!

July Lawn of the Month = Weldon & Karen King, and Kimberly Saunders of 14424 Parracombe Lane

The July Lawn of the Month goes to Weldon King, Karen King, and Kimberly Saunders of 14424 Parracombe Lane. Even with all the July heat, they have managed to keep their lawn looking lush, green, and inviting. Weldon only uses a battery mower, set at the highest deck setting (estimated about 4”). The lawn is mowed once a week, and the edges trimmed with a weed eater. They have a lawn service for feeding and aeration. In addition to their lovely front lawn, they have also created a lush area in their back yard, with a green swath of lawn, undulating borders filled with  statuary, hibiscus and crape myrtle, all overlooking the golf course. What a tranquil oasis!

Yard of the Month=11406 Longtown Drive

This beautiful yard belongs to Jerry and Paula Jarvis. It is such a pleasing combination of different annuals, perennials, and some fun festive decorative elements. Paula likes to add begonias every year, as they do well in both sun and shade for her. Jerry makes sure to spray neem oil about every 3 weeks, in the morning, to prevent insect problems. They both take pride in having a nice yard, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Lawn of the Month=11219 Longtown Drive

This gorgeous lawn belongs to Steve Demeyer. He contracts with a lawn service for fertilizing, and weed/insect control, but mows and maintains the lawn himself. He attributes his success to keeping the mower deck up as high as possible, and watering 3x per week at 45 minutes each time. Great work, Steve!

The winners of the first Lawn of the Month were the Kuhfuss family.  Timothy Kuhfuss at 14625 Lavenham Lane.  When asked about his gorgeous lawn, Mr. Kuhfuss humbly replied, “We do our best.”

May Yard of the Month

The Winners of May's Yard of the Month—Jack and Kay Schiltz at 10107 Cravensford Terrace.
Mr. and Mrs. Schiltz use Miracle grow 2x monthly and Repellex granules as needed to keep things looking healthy and discourage critters. Kay is particularly fond of verbena and lantana. Their front bedding areas are a lovely mix of evergreens, pops of color, and architectural elements for interest. The coleus planters flanking the front door add additional layers of color and dimensional interest.

COLLINGTON HOLIDAY HOUSE FESTIVE AWARD 2021

Picture
Shane and Amberly Elmore of 15001 Avening Place (Longtown Section) are the Collington Holiday House Festive Award Winners for 2021.  The Elmores have lived in Collington for over five years. The process for decorating their house begins on Thanksgiving Day every year and includes the addition of more lights and inflatables.
The Elmores take full advantage of the corner lot the house sits on and decorate with a mixture of multi-color lights that encompass three sides including the fence that outlines the back yard, each window, as well as the shrubs and along the driveway.  This house glows from blocks away.  As you walk up their driveway, you are greeted by Frosty the snowman.  You definitely want to take the time to stop by

COLLINGTON HOLIDAY HOUSE CLASSIC AWARD 2021

Picture
Mike and Shannon Hayes of 8924 Lavenham Loop (Lavenham Section) are the Collington Holiday House Classic Award Winners for 2021.  They have lived in Collington for over three years.  The Hayes children contributed a major portion of the time spent to decorate their house.
The first thing you notice as you drive down the road are the three deer that light up the front lawn.  They have big red bows around their necks.   The shrubs are beautifully decorated with white lights, with all the windows having wreaths with snowflakes on them. The eight-piece manger on the front lawn gives a feeling of calmness and peace.  This house has three spotlights that accentuate the total picture.  This is truly a simple, but elegant and classic house.  Take the time to visit and let your mind appreciate the peacefulness…

The Collington Grounds Committee “Yard of the Month” award, for the month of October, has been presented to Caitlyn Sexton of 14200 Ashmill Drive.

Caitlyn certainly knocked the committees “Fall Décor” theme out of the park. Caitlyn has lived in Collington for 3 years and her love of community and her neighbors is obvious while talking with her about activities she is involved within the Ashmill section.  As posted the end of September, the committee judged porch and yard décor with a FALL theme this month. The pictures speak for themselves with beautiful groupings that include mums, different size and color pumpkins, colorful pillows, vintage stepstools, rustic signs, scarecrows, hay bales, and an elegant fall door wreath.

Caitlyn will have the “Yard of the Month” sign in her front yard till the end of November and received a $25 Lowes gift card.

We encourage residents to take a stroll or drive around the community and view the festive decor, the Holiday Season is upon us! You will definitely be inspired!

We have a long list of honorable mentions this month: 14525 Tealby Drive, 14619 Collington Court, 11107 Collington Drive, 10507 Pembrookdock Place, 10042 Paddockwood Terrace, 9818 Bayford Drive, 9807 Bayford Drive, 14001 Ashmill Drive, 9837 Bafferton Road, 14813 Lavenham Lane.
There will NOT be a YOTM award for November, but we present TWO awards for Holiday decorations in December.

The Classic Holiday House award is for elegant/traditional/classic decorations. Our Festive Holiday House award is for whimsical/funny/any thing goes décor. These awards will be chosen the middle of December. We generally review houses twice for these awards: at night and during the day.

    2) Shrub maintenance and grooming (shaping versus shaggy)

    3) Color. Are colorful
flowers being used to enhance the overall curb appeal of the property.
